Kind Call - Safeguarding Independent Living

Upper Arlington Kind Call is a free service available to any Upper Arlington resident.

Upper Arlington Kind Call was established by the Upper Arlington Commission on Aging in 1990. It is designed to help individuals who live alone or who are primary caregivers for a family member. It is a simple system to use. Each day at a time designated by the member a phone call is placed to the home via a computer at the Municipal Services Center. The member simply picks up the phone, listens to the message and presses "9" if everything is okay. If the member does not answer the phone, the computer will call back several times within a half-hour. If there is still no response a member designated "key-holder" will be contacted to check on the member's well-being. In the event that a key holder cannot be reached, then the Upper Arlington safety forces will be notified to check on the member.

Many people feel that they are just "too independent" for this type of system. They think that having a daily call will be burdensome to remember and they don't want to "bother" anyone.

Most of our members are still very independent. They drive, exercise at the gym, participate in community functions and are very active! Most of these members choose to have their calls placed to them first thing in the morning. This way, they get the call when they first wake up and don't worry about it for the remainder of the day. They know that if they need to "suspend" or change their calls for any reason, it is easy to do and is flexible to fit into their busy schedules.

These members realize that even though they are still very active and able-bodied, accidents can happen at any time. They have made personal safety a priority in their lives and have taken proactive steps to insure it. These members also know how devastating accidental falls can be. They know the sooner help arrives, the better the chances are for a speedy recovery.

Please take a moment to consider the peace of mind that the Kind Call program can afford you and your family. Knowing that there is a daily telephone check-in will insure that you have assistance if you need it.

Signing up for the Kind Call program is easy and only takes a few minutes. Please contact Amy Schossler at (614)442-4016 or at aschossler@kindcall.org.
